Passing the UK Driving Theory Test

I passed the UK driving theory test recently & thought to share how I prepared for the exam in case you find it useful & help you to pass it too.

First, I bought the text book The official DVSA theory test for car drivers Paperback & finished reading it all. As am new to UK & come originally from a country where traffic signs are considered an option & it is a rule not to follow any rule, I found it very useful to read all the material cover to cover. For someone else who is bit more knowledgeable with traffic lights & general driving rules, might find some of the details bit boring & can skip some parts, which I think should be absolutely fine. If in doubt, don't hesitate, just read it all, better safe then sorry.

Secondly, you will need to buy Driving Test Success All Tests 2015 Edition (PC DVD), which is very important for two reasons:

  1. You need to practice (& a lot) on the hazard perception test. I think this particular part of the test, is one of the main reasons for lots of people to fail because they take it lightly & don't train well. You need to practice enough till you get confident with the concept of the test & how to collect the maximum number of points. In few words, you need to learn when to click the mouse to mark a hazard on the road ! Timing is very important, the earlier you click, the higher points you get. Well, you can consider a sort of a computer game :)
  2. Practice on some theory tests & of course, the more, the better because you will find many of those practice questions as is in your actual exam !

While practicing, you will notice, you need to complement your knowledge with The Highway Code. The textbook will be covering most of the important aspects of the exam including traffic signs but you might some in the practice exam which aren't mentioned in the textbook (& which you can find in The Highway Code). One other alternative, is to just practice on as many tests as possible so you get hands on any question that have not been covered in the textbook.

Final remarks:

  1. You can definitely pass the test by just buying the CD & practice all aspects of the theory test. You will just miss the full picture you will get by reading through the textbook but it depends on how much you are in a hurry for it !
  2. Before buying anything, make sure it is the latest version & reflecting the latest changes in the exam. I bought the two above few months back & I shared them as is, but there might be newer versions available for both now.
  3. There are practice tests available for free on Gov.Uk over here, so have a look on them too, nothing to lose. Just be careful as I don't think they cover the hazard perception part plus I don't think they are enough if you didn't read the textbook.
  4. Book your exam in advance especially if you are resident in London or you might end up waiting two weeks on average to find a proper free slot.
